The School of Basic Medical Sciences of Nanchang University, formerly known as the Department of Basic Medical Sciences of Jiangxi Medical College, was founded in 1934. During the last 80 years, it has been striving continuously for self-improvement. The school adheres to the spirit of "Cultivating Morality and Talents", improves its educational quality, and cultivates talents in basic medical teaching and research. It has achieved a good reputation by establishing a comprehensive "Undergraduate-Master-Doctor" talent cultivation system and laying a solid foundation in outstanding research and social service.

Organizations: The School of Basic Medical Sciences consists of 5 departments, 12 teaching and research sections, 2 outstanding medical teaching teams, and 1 provincial-level demonstration experimental teaching center. There are 167 teaching staff, including 120 teachers and 30 technicians. Over 65% of these teachers hold a doctorate, and 30% of them have studied/trained abroad for more than one year. The school currently has 410 students, including 152 undergraduate students who majored in Basic Medical Science, and 258 graduate students (45 doctoral students and 213 master students). The school undertakes the responsibility of teaching and scientific training for students in different majors, including clinical medicine, anesthesiology, preventive medicine, laboratory medicine, and pharmacy etc., and provides strong support for the cultivation of medical talents.

The Honor of Faculty: The school adheres to the principle of "strengthening the school with talents" and vigorously recruits high-level teaching and research talents. There is 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 4 National-level Young Talents, 9 Hundred and Ten Million Talents Project of Jiangxi Province, 9 Leaders of Major Academic Disciplines of Jiangxi Province, 7 Provincial "Double Thousand" Talents, and 3 winners of Jiangxi Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards. Besides, the school has 2 "Advanced Collective of Teacher Ethics" in Jiangxi Province, 3 Provincial-level Gold Medal teachers, 1 High-level Undergraduate Teaching Team,12 winners of the Outstanding Teacher Award of Baogang Foundation, 7 winners of the "Top Ten Teaching Role Models" and Nomination Awards of Nanchang University, 1 winner of the National Third Prize and Provincial First Prize in the National Innovation Teaching Competition, and 5 winners of the Jiangxi Provincial Youth Teacher Competition.

Discipline Construction and Scientific Research: The school adheres to the "four orientations", guides original research, and strengthens the intersection and integration of disciplines. At present, there are one doctoral degree program and one master’s degree program in the first-level discipline of basic medicine respectively, forming multiple advantageous research directions such as "nervous system and disease, solid tumor molecular targeting, regenerative medicine and reproductive biology, structural biology, and drug research". Molecular biology and genetics disciplines ranked in the top 5 ‰ of ESI, while biology and biochemistry, neuroscience, and behavioral sciences disciplines ranked in the top 1% of ESI. It has several provincial key laboratories, such as "the Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Neuroscience", "the Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Reproductive Physiology and Pathology", "the Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Autonomic Nervous Function and Disease", "the Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Tumor Etiology and molecular pathology", as well as provincial scientific research and social service platforms, such as the Biomedical Research Institute of Nanchang University, and the Institute of Judicial Medical Appraisal of Nanchang University. In the last five years, more than 80 National Natural Science Foundation projects have been approved, including 1 Outstanding Youth Project, 2 Key Projects, and 1 Excellent Youth Project, with a total funding of over 40 million RMB. The school published over 500 SCI-indexed papers, of which there are 32 SCI papers in the Q1 district and more than 150 SCI papers in the Q2 district. The school teachers have won a total of 9 "Three Grand Prizes" in Jiangxi Province, including 1 first prize in Jiangxi Natural Science.

Talent Cultivation: The school currently has 1 national gold course, 1 English brand course for international students awarded by the Ministry of Education, 11 provincial-level online gold courses in Jiangxi, 6 provincial-level mixed online and offline gold courses, and 4 provincial-level shared education courses. Additionally, 4 courses have won the school-level ideological and political demonstration courses and demonstration teams. Besides, there is 1 winner of the national gold prize in the seventh "Internet+" contest, 3 winners of national awards in the Challenge Cup extracurricular academic competition for college students, 3 special awards, and 17 first prizes in the National Life Science Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and 19 National Awards for Basic Medical Innovation Forum. Over 79.3% of graduates who majored in basic medical science were enrolled as postgraduates in 2022.
