The School of Basic Medical Sciences, Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University, was founded in 1934. Formerly known as the Department of Basic Medical Sciences of Jiangxi Medical College, the School has upheld a legacy of excellence for more than 90 years. Adhering to the philosophy of “education as the foundation, moral education and talent cultivation”, the School has continuously enhanced its academic standardsand has trained a large number of talents in basic medical sciences for the Nation.

The School of Basic Medical Sciences is comprised of five departments, eleven teaching and research sections, one nationally recognized Outstanding Medical Teaching Team, and one provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration center that includes six sub-centers.The School has a team of 163 faculty and staff, which includes 106 full-time teachers and 27 laboratory technicians. Among the full-time faculty, 72% hold doctoral degrees, and more than 37% have overseas study or research experience of one year or longer. With 51 doctoral supervisors and 97 master's supervisors, the School undertakes basic medical teaching for 13 majors, such as Clinical Medicine, Anesthesiology, Preventive Medicine, Medical Laboratory Science, and Pharmacy. It is also responsible for the scientific research training of undergraduate medical students, providing robust support for talent development in medical education.

The School boasts a distinguished faculty team, which includes one Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 38 high-level talents. Its faculty has been widely recognized for their teaching excellence, with honors including two Jiangxi Provincial Advanced Collectives for Teacher Ethics, four provincial Gold Medal Teachers, and one provincial high-level undergraduate teaching team. Individual accolades feature twelve recipients of the Baosteel Education Foundation Outstanding Teacher Award and eleven faculty members honored as Nanchang University's "Top Ten Teaching Exemplars." In teaching competitions, faculty have secured notable achievements such as one Third Prize in the National College Teachers Innovation Competition (and a First Prize at the provincial level), one Third Prize in the National Young Faculty Teaching Competition, and six awards in the Jiangxi Provincial Young Teachers Teaching Competition. The School's pedagogical impact is further demonstrated by five Jiangxi Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards and two Youth Cultivation Projects for teaching achievements.

The School is distinguished by its robust disciplinary development and distinctive research strengths. Guided by the "Four Orientations" principle, it is committed to advancing original research and actively fostering interdisciplinary integration and collaboration. The School currently oversees one first-level doctoral degree program, one first-level master’s degree program, and one postdoctoral research station. It has developed several high-impact research foci, such as neurobiology, tumor biology, stem cells and regenerative medicine, and reproductive biology. In disciplines related to basic medical sciences, Molecular Biology & Genetics has entered the global top 0.5‰ in the ESI rankings, while Biology & Biochemistry, Neuroscience & Behavior, and Immunology have all achieved top 1% global ESI rankings.The School has established a robust portfolio of high-level research platforms, anchored by several provincial and ministerial key laboratories and facilities. These cornerstones of its research infrastructure include the Ministry of Education Organoid Resource Bank, the Ministry of Education Innovation Center for Basic Research on Molecular Targeting of Solid Tumors, the Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Oncology Biology, the Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Brain Science and Brain Health, and the Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Basic Medical Sciences in Universities.In addition, the School hosts several university-level research platforms, including the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, the Biomedical Research Institute, and the Institute of Forensic Medicine of Nanchang University. These platforms serve as essential pillars supporting the School's scientific innovation, disciplinary growth, talent development, and societal contributions.Over the past five years, the School has undertaken 160 research projects at various levels, with total funding reaching nearly 80 million CNY. Among these, 79 were supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), with related funding close to 50 million CNY. Faculty members have published more than 500 SCI-indexed papers, including 32 in CAS Q1 (top-tier) journals and over 150 in Q2 journals. The School has also received 14 awards from Jiangxi Province’s three major scientific award categories, among which are two first prizes of the Jiangxi Provincial Natural Science Award.

The School demonstrates distinctive strengths in its program and curriculum development, currently offering 3 national first-class undergraduate courses, 1 MOE-branded course for international students in China, 18 provincial first-class courses, 4 provincial shared-education courses, and 3 provincial virtual simulation experiment teaching projects. Over the past five years, with faculty guidance, students have achieved outstanding results including 2 national gold awards in the China International College Students' "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, 1 national gold award in the "Challenge Cup" National College Students Entrepreneurship Plan Competition, 1 national second prize in the "Challenge Cup" National College Students Extracurricular Academic Competition, 14 national awards in the National Medical Innovation Competition for College Students (formerly the Forum on Innovative Research and Experimental Design in Basic Medicine), and 32 national awards in the National Life Science Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for College Students, including 2 grand prizes.

The School has achieved outstanding outcomes in talent cultivation, with a current enrollment of 679 students comprising 218 undergraduates and 461 graduate students (including 333 master's and 128 doctoral candidates). Guided by its mission to develop high-caliber talents who are "strong in ideological and political awareness, solid in foundational knowledge, excellent in scientific research, capable in teaching, proficient in medicine, and innovative in thinking," the School implements small-class teaching and a "one-to-one mentorship" system for undergraduates, placing strong emphasis on cultivating students' research and innovation capabilities. Since the establishment of its undergraduate programs, the School has consistently maintained one of the highest postgraduate admission rates across Nanchang University. Furthermore, over the past five years, undergraduate students have authored more than 50 SCI papers as first authors under faculty supervision and have received over 80 national-level competition awards.

The School has developed a distinctive and highly effective approach to Party-building, with a strong emphasis on inheriting "red" traditions and actively cultivating its "Stem Cell" Party-building brand. Professor Li Gang was nominated for the National Model of Teaching and Educating and has been honored with multiple prestigious titles, including Model Teacher of Jiangxi Province, Outstanding Communist Party Member of Jiangxi Provincial Universities, and Jiangxi Province's first "Good Teacher in the Hearts of Students in the New Era." In addition, a number of young faculty members have been recognized with awards such as the Jiangxi Provincial May Fourth Youth Medal, the Nanchang University May Fourth Youth Medal, the Nanchang University Young Professional Star, and the Role Model in Fostering Virtue Through Education.

Looking ahead, the School will remain committed to its motto of "Honor virtue and pursue broad knowledge; uphold integrity and embrace innovation," and adhere to the core values of "Integrity, Responsibility, Unity, and Dedication." Guided by its mission and vision of "Cultivating First-Class Talent and Building an Exemplary School," the School will keep pace with cutting-edge global science while aligning with the comprehensive reforms and "Double First-Class" initiatives of the university and medical school. By deepening all-round reforms and strengthening its capacities in education, research, and social service, the School will contribute actively to regional socioeconomic development. Through concrete actions, it aims to make new and greater contributions to talent development and scientific innovation in support of the "Healthy China" and "Prosperous Jiangxi" healthcare initiatives.
